Specialist in robotic surgery for kidney cancer

Condition

Other Kidney & Upper Tract Conditions

Alongside kidney cancer and stones, Mr Reekhaye treats a range of other kidney and upper urinary tract conditions, including benign growths and blockages.

Overview

The kidneys and upper urinary tract can be affected by a number of conditions beyond cancer and stones. Mr Reekhaye assesses each carefully to determine whether monitoring, medical management or surgery is the right approach.

Benign tumours & cysts

Not all kidney growths are cancerous. Benign tumours and simple cysts are common and often need only monitoring. Where a growth is uncertain or causing problems, further assessment or removal may be advised.

Upper tract urothelial cancer

This is a cancer of the lining of the kidney’s collecting system or the ureter. It is treated according to its location and stage, and may involve robotic surgery to remove the affected kidney and ureter.

Blockages & drainage problems

Conditions such as PUJ (pelvi-ureteric junction) obstruction or a ureteric stricture can block the normal drainage of urine and, over time, affect the kidney. These can often be corrected with robotic reconstructive surgery, such as a pyeloplasty.

Common questions

Are kidney cysts dangerous?
Most simple kidney cysts are harmless and need no treatment, only occasional monitoring. More complex cysts are assessed more closely to be sure they are not a concern.
What is PUJ obstruction?
It is a narrowing where the kidney joins the ureter, which can block urine drainage. It is often treatable with robotic reconstructive surgery to restore normal flow.
