Specialist in robotic surgery for kidney cancer

Procedure

Robotic Nephroureterectomy

Removal of the kidney together with its ureter and a small cuff of bladder, for cancer affecting the lining of the upper urinary tract.

What it is

This operation removes the kidney along with the whole length of its ureter and a small surrounding cuff of the bladder. It is the standard treatment for cancer of the lining of the upper urinary tract.

What it treats

It treats upper-tract urothelial carcinoma — a cancer that affects the lining of the kidney’s collecting system or the ureter.

What the procedure involves

Performed robotically through small incisions, the kidney, ureter and bladder cuff are removed together to reduce the risk of the cancer recurring along the tract.

Recovery & follow-up

Recovery is supported by an enhanced-recovery approach. Because this type of cancer can recur elsewhere in the urinary tract, ongoing surveillance is an important part of your care.

Common questions

Why is the ureter removed as well?
Removing the whole ureter and a cuff of bladder helps reduce the risk of the cancer returning along the urinary tract, where it can otherwise recur.
What does follow-up involve?
Regular monitoring — including imaging and bladder checks — helps detect and treat any recurrence early.
